ESET Smart Security 5 REVIEW

The founders of ESET wrote their first application to detect a specific virus in 1987 and have since grown their company into a global security company with over 700 employees worldwide. They have passed a record 70 VB100 tests since 1998 and have sold over 100 million licenses. ESET is invested in long-term success across all platforms, including server-based and mobile security. For this review, we looked at the fifth version of ESET Smart Security. We tested the Windows version; however, they also offer mobile and Mac internet security versions.

ESET Smart Security is a complete suite; it provides parental controls, a personal firewall, virus and spyware protection, rootkit detection and removal, spam filters, game modes, device scanning and more. Though a long list of features may appear impressive, they must be paired with exceptional malware detection and removal to truly be the best security software. ESET has that too. ESET provides above average detection and malware removal abilities and boasts an extensive test history.
ESET has passed a remarkable 70 VB100 tests with only three failures. Even more impressive, ESET has passed all of their VB100 tests in the past 10 years. In the most recent July 2011 AV-Comparatives test they scored a 98.2% protection rate, which placed them in roughly the top third (the best software scored over 99%). In the August 2011 AV-Test report they achieved certification but scored a bit lower than the industry average. Our experience combined with third-party malware tests leads us to conclude that ESET can provide formidable, dependable malware detection. Like most security software, they do have room for improvement in malware repair.
In terms of what ESET can protect your PC from, it includes an exhaustive list of abilities that includes the ability to detect viruses, spyware, adware, spam, rootkits, keyloggers, phishers, Trojans, browser hijackers and most anything else hackers continually release every second of the day. To combat these emergent threats, ESET employs ThreastSense technology and cloud-based reputation technology.

Security Features:

Our first scan using ESET took a bit longer than we expected. The initial scan took over 16 minutes to scan 157,849 objects. However, scans can be set to run in the background or in a less intrusive manner. You can also schedule scans and select what kinds of scans you want to run.
The parental control tools can manage over 20 predefined website categories such as adult, games, gambling, shopping, criminal activities and proxies. You can also block or allow specific websites and regulate how much time your child spends online. They also offer family security training to help adults and children make a better choice about what websites they visit and what information to share online.
To facilitate uninterrupted game playing and streaming they have a game mode. When game mode is active it will suspend system notifications and pause scans. To protect from malware that infects via non-internet sources, it can scan drives and discs as well as block by device type. A few security features that this software does not provide include website advisors, a safe browser, a sandbox, social networking tools and a virtual keyboard.

Help & Support:

ESET provides extensive online support through articles, educational videos, support news, a user forum, quick guides and user guides, updates and more. It is a bit difficult to find ESET's support phone numbers and email address online. They route you through their online support before releasing direct contact information. They also do not provide live chat support. We eventually discovered their phone number and support hours through the site map.
